Pristine’s teacher asked me to buy a plain white t-shirt with collar for their school program. Since my office is near a department store, I went during lunch time. I went through racks and racks of children’s clothes and had trouble picking the right size because my daughter was not there. I kept on taking out the shirt in the ramp and used my bare imagination to pick the right size.
I finally went home picking up a size XS because it was the size that should fit her and though it was a little bit big for her small size, it was the smallest.
BUT my mother disagreed and told me I should have bought size S since it’s smaller than XS. Huh??
Inside my unsophisticated mommy brain, it’s XS/S/M/L/XL/… and so on but my mother argued that since XL is bigger than L, XS must be bigger than S. I know the analogy kind of make sense but,
I BEG YOUR PARDON!!??
So I called the hubby and asked him. He scratched his head and sided with - - my mother!! Just horrible. Three adults doing some discussion with the toddler holding her shirt on the background, wide-eyed and veery curious!
I searched the net and confirmed I am right. The other two adults in the house did NOT budge!! So please heed my plea, you geniuses of the bloggy world - - answer my question,
is XS smaller than S, or bigger?
I feel I am right that XS is smaller than S in all accounts. So can someone step up and side with me!?

[...] while you’re here, I mean in this blog, please take a moment to hop on to my other blog to answer a duh question that’s been bugging me lately! Thank [...]
Yes, XS is X-tra small. So smaller than small.
Side ko nimo Gracey! =)
yes, the x stands for extra (in English) so while XL is extra large and bigger than a large the XS is extra small meaning that it’s smaller than the S. You’re right!
of course. of course.
The adjective “extra” when it modifies “large” would mean “larger”.
When “extra” modifies “small” it means “smaller”.
However, for the sake of family peace, I would just smile, be agreeable, and know, within yourself, that you are right.
Absolutely it would mean smaller than the small. lol You are right!
Totally on your side…lmao…of course something that’s extra-small is smaller than something that’s merely small!
XS is smaller than S
XL is larger than L
and maybe that’s why they got the XS wrong!
Just agreeing with everyone else!
XS L
But I think the more important question is, did it fit? =)
Oops. that was supposed to be XS < S and XL > L — stupid html. Sorry about the double post to fix that.
That’s right! XL is bigger than L, so XS is smaller than S. The important thing is, did it fit her. I usually buy the next size up, if it’s made of 100% cotton because it always shrinks in the dryer.
XS is most definitely smaller than a S.
I agree with you and everyone else said. One intersting thing to note is that sometimes the girls’ clothes are cut much smaller than boys clothes. If you are getting a golf shirt, the girls’ will be shorter, have shorter sleeves, and be much more tight fitting than a boys’ shirt. I have boy/girl twins. Sometimes the girls shirt (even when comparing 2 extra small sizes) will be 4 or 5 inches shorter. The children are the same size but the clothes are not the same between gender in some brands. If I am getting a golf shirt, many times I get my daughter a boys’ shirt as well. That way it does not ride up her belly as quickly and it lasts longer before she outgrows it.
Thanks for the input Jen. Yeah, I’ve noticed that too. So sometimes I buy boy’s shirt for my daughter so it can cover her belly when she sleeps (she tend to move around so much at night).
