I don’t know where she’s learned it but lately,Pristine had started to ask why she has no brothers and sisters. It surprised my mother when she first heard it because it just came out of nowhere. One fine afternoon when they were playing, Pristine suddenly stopped, looked glum and said, “I’m lonely, I have no brothers and sisters!”
My mom was like, whoa! Where did that come from? She’s turning 5 tomorrow and very much aware that she’s an only child. She’s the only one in her group of friends who complains about it, though.
It has escalated so much that she uses it to blackmail us. Like when we’re in the park and it’s time to go home, she’ll blurt out, “but I have no brothers and sisters at home! Can I stay here longer?”
Hubby and I were talking about only children yesterday. I was saying what a real blessing my sister was for me, and he lamented that he’d always wanted a sib. I know that Mandy missed her sister after she passed away and I wish I could have given her a sibling.
I know many parents only want one child, and it is their prerogative, but I would encourage having two.
You see, dear friend, we will not always be here for our children and a sibling at least gives a chance that they will have each other in their later life.
