Today is Barbie’s 50th birthday. She’s an old lady now but look at her, never aged, never will! She’s supposed to at least look like the one on the left, you know!
There was an announcement in the radio about a Barbie party celebration at a nearby mall so we went since it’s Friday and it’s my day off from work.
When we arrived, there was utter chaos! A big boobed girl in hot pink and fishnet stockings was standing in the stage, waving her hand on the audience, composed of parents and children as young as newborns! The toy store where that Barbie gathering was held also had a promotion of buy one, take one Barbie - you buy one Barbie doll, you get another one of the same price or lower, for free! What a great marketing. I’ve never seen parents going crazy over plastic dolls.
Sadly, sadly, stupidly — including myself!

I don’t know what came over me. I was one of the crazed parents who dove in to get a box and another. Pristine never even asked me to buy for her. Ah, memories of my childhood came back. Though I’ve never been interested in Barbies or any dolls for that matter, my friends were. And I assumed Pristine would love one. For $32, I picked a random princess Barbie and got a $19 doll for free. I thought I got a great bargain by having two dolls for $32.
After all the chaos ceased, I am so disgusted to have spent that much (ok maybe cheap for you but it isn’t for me, after I came to my senses!!) on a doll that’s probably going to gather dust in our house.
The next time Barbie invites us for her 100th birthday party, I ain’t taking my grandkids to see her!! Urrrgh!!

That reminds a few weeks back when my husband and I were at a garage sale and happened to see 20-30 barbie dolls in box; the whole lot for $5 and in great condidtion. At first we were like “Wow, what a steal” but then like you thought “Why do we need these?”. I’m glad we didn’t buy them in the end. It’s really madness all these plastic toys that we all feel compelled to buy our children especially when they all eventually end up in a landfill.
Say what you will the new Barbie looks good. I think anyone who sees it will be impressed and I bet the young girls will really like it.
